SKAGWAY, ALASKA
Wednesday, July 6th
We arrived bright and early. Well, the sun came up about 4:00 a.m. and we didn't arrive until about 7:00 a.m. The day was half gone when we pulled into port. Yet, another quaint town. We liked all of these quaint little towns. Nice and quiet except when 4 to 6 ships pull in and bring tens of thousands of visitors to invade their quietness!
Even though it was chilly (which we loved), they still had some very pretty flowers. You can see our train parked in the background. That would be our excursion later in the morning.
YUP....you know what that is....a REAL SNOW PLOW for the train tracks! It is used every winter. It is quite the machine. Very impressive.
ALL ABOARD and up into those mountains we go. And it was quite the climb we had too. Everyone seemed to be excited for this adventure.
We were able to get several good views of our train as it went around bends and turns. The mountains were very impressive. Alaska is a beautiful state.
At one point on our climb up we could look through the valleys and see our ship parked at the dock...along with several other ships.
We went as far as the CANADIAN BORDER in the mountains. We were told we could NOT get off the train. We were not 'cleared' by customs to get off the train. It was nice to see the STATE and COUNTRY FLAGS flying up there.
In its day, this little 'house' was used as a BORDER PATROL house. It is no longer used.
Back down at the base of the mountain we had a few minutes to do a little shopping before heading back on the boat. You can see the ship in the background.
I think Becky was actually the last person off the train.....you know, gathering the kiddos things and making sure nothing got left behind.
BACK ON TIME.......and getting on the ship.......
along with Becky and David and kids.
Another great excursion today!!
